Curriculum for first year students is carefully planned, ensuring a solid foundation in each major before advancing into the remainder of your coursework.
You can review your program requirements via the Course Catalogue for more information on coursework outside of major requirements. This information is also available directly within Self Service under "My Progress."
All incoming School of Music students register for the following:
All first year students take UACC 101 (Creative Practices) from the University Common Curriculum.
Students are placed into one of the following First Year Writing (FYW) courses: FYWT 009, FYWT 100, FYWT 111. The specific section (day and time) is your choice.
Your FYW placement is based on standardized test scores and is included in the "First Year Students - Registration is Now Open" email from the Office of the Registrar.
**Please note there are many sections of FYWT 111. Be sure to advance the arrows to compare all sections!
The remainder of your Spring schedule will vary by program:
The following courses are completed during the first semester by music composition and performance students:
Composition and Performance majors take Applied Major Instruction each semester. This course is 3 credits of private instruction in composition, voice, or the instrumental area of specialization.
**This course will be added by the School of Music prior to Orientation.
Students are grouped into sections of Music Theory I by proficiency level based on their placement exam, so it is very important that this section is not changed. If, however, after the start of the semester a student feels that they belong in a different level, they may speak with Amanda Melczer in the School of Music (firstname.lastname@example.org) to discuss.
Like Music Theory, sections of Musicianship I are carefully arranged based on placement exam and are not to be altered by the student.
All Vocal Performance and Composition majors are enrolled in Chorus their first semester, with Instrumental Performance majors being enrolled in a General Ensemble course as a placeholder.
The School of Music arranges a large number of ensembles that students may audition for, allowing for a broad range of musical experience. All School of Music students will be notified via email in August of the ensemble audition information, with exact placements assigned after the start of the semester.
The following courses are completed during the first semester by students in the MBET program.
For questions about the MBET program, you may contact Michael Johsnson via email at email@example.com
Students are grouped into sections of Music Skills I by proficiency level based on their placement exam, so it is very important that this section is not changed. If, however, after the start of the semester a student feels that they belong in a different level, they may speak with Michael Johsnson (firstname.lastname@example.org), head of the MBET department, to discuss changing this section.
During Orientation, students will meet with advisors in the School of Music and will learn about and register for elective course offerings.
The MBET curriculum offers a wide range of elective options in a variety of disciplines. Two popular options are Intro to Pro Tools (MBET*111) and Intro to Live Sound (MUSC*260).
