School of Theater - Welcome, First Year Students!

The Freshman experience includes group projects spanning all programs in the Ira Brind School of Theater, aimed at providing you with a comprehensive and coherent first year. Curriculum for first year students is carefully planned, ensuring a solid foundation before advancing into the remainder of your coursework. 

The freshman curriculum has three principal themes:

  • Presence: Show up. Make your presence felt and your voice heard.
  • Ensemble: Work together, collaborate and create. Trust your partner. Commit to the group.
  • Content: “Make good art.” Be storytellers. Hold a mirror up to yourselves and the world. 

Registration Instructions

Complete your Spring 2017 schedule in the Self Service Student Planning module using the following key as a guide. Please review our Self Service instructions for assistance.

  •  Pink :  Students will self register over the summer
  •  Blue :  Theater department has registered students in advance
  • Yellow: Students will work with the School of Theater during orientation to register, post placement assessment.

First Semester Curriculum - All Theater Programs

The following 6 credits are common to all incoming theater students:

  • Creative Practices (UACC 101)

** Music Theater majors: take note of the times to avoid when making your UACC and FYWT section choices listed below.

University Common Curriculum - Creative Practices

All first year students must take UACC 101 (Creative Practices) from the University Common Curriculum

First Year Writing

Students are placed into one of the following First Year Writing (FYW) courses: FYWT 009, FYWT 100, FYWT 111. The specific section (day and time) is your choice. 

Your FYW placement is based on standardized test scores and is included in the "First Year Students - Registration is Now Open" email from the Office of the Registrar

Musical Theater majors should take note of the times to avoid listed below for courses pending placement.

**Please note there are many sections of FYWT 111. Be sure to advance the arrows to compare all sections!

Acting

In addition to the above courses common all students in the School of Theater, the following complete the schedules of students in the Acting program.

Movement for Actors I (THMD 161)
Stage Combat I (THMD 171)
Acting Studio I (THST 101)
Voice and Speech for Actors I (THVC 111)

Directing, Playwriting, and Production

In addition to the above courses common all students in the School of Theater, the following complete the schedules of students in the DPP program.

Musical Theater

In addition to the above courses common all students in the School of Theater, the following complete the schedules of students in the Musical Theater program. 

Students place into the Dance and Music Skills courses listed below by placement exams during orientation week. You will receive help from Theater staff after placement to register for the correct courses and sections. 

When making FYWT and UACC choices, you should avoid the following times to leave room for these placement course sections:

  • Tuesday/Friday from 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM
  • Wednesday from 8:30 AM - 3:50 PM
  • Thursday from 1:00 - 2:20 PM
